Business Description:
While working for CRH in the 1990’s, Donal O’Riain came Ground Granulated Blast Furnace Slag (GGBS), a by-product from the steel industry, as an alternative to cement. He spent the next 10 years investigating the possibility of building a plant exclusively for GGBS.
In 2000, Donal formed Ecocem and over the next few years opened 2 plants in Dublin and the Netherlands. In 2007 Ecocem had 2 major deals with Saint Gobain, the world’s largest building materials company and ArcelorMittal, the world’s largest steel company.
Today Ecocem is Europe’s leading independent producer and supplier of GGBS with 3 manufacturing plants in Ireland, Holland and France. |

In its’ 3 plants in Europe, Ecocem has the capacity to produce 1.4mt of GGBS per year. This product has a number of unique qualities that make it better than Ordinary Portland Cement (OPC), these include its’ environmental, technical and aesthetic aspects.
Environmental Aspects
The cement industry accounts for 5% of the man made CO2 emissions and is the 2nd largest source of CO2 inIrelandafter electricity. Each tonne of OPC uses 1.6 tonnes of new quarried material and produces c800kg of CO2; Ecocem on the other hand uses no new material and produces only 29kg of CO2.
Technical & Aesthetic Aspects
GGBS is not only technically superior (stronger, last longer, easier to work and more resistant to chemical attack) to OPC but it also is lighter in colour and has a better finish.
Ecocem through its’ environmental consultancy, EmissionZero, helps organisations to measure, reduce and offset their CO2 emissions. |
Value Proposition:
Ecocem adds value by allowing our customers greater flexibility in their concrete designs. While going against the grain of the industry, this innovation allows our customers to create more environmental friendly, durable and aestetic designs.
Traditional cement manufacturers only offer a limited range of blended cement to their customers thus reducing the customers ability to produce the most suitable mix for their individual needs.
Ecocem by selling directly to the readymix and precast concrete producers, allows them the ability design mixes better suited to the individual end customers needs. For example in aggressive environments, a higher percentage of GGBS can be added to the mix to achieve the desired effect rather than having to add expensive additives to the design or buying specialist cements. This has lead the National Road Authority in Ireland to specify our product on their bridges as it increase their useful life.
Ecocem also targets the end customer making them aware of the advantages of our product. This allows them to get the advantages of more aesthetic design without the additional cost of purchasing white cement. In fact many projects that have used our cement have won industry awards.
It also can allow the end customer to achieve a much more environmentally friendly design which can improve the resale value of their product by gaining BREEMAM and LEED points without increasing costs.
